Monarch Mountain at the Crest, located 20 miles west of Salida, CO on US Hwy 50, has announced its grand opening, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023. Monarch Mountain at the Crest, sits on both the Continental Divide Trail and the Crest Trail and is in close proximity to the Colorado Trail and wants to be an essential part of the hiker’s trek.
Activities for the day include local DJ J.M. Kreski playing music, 20 percent off all retail items in the new Elation Sports Shop, and Scenic Tram rides will be half-price, while all current 2023-2024 season pass holders ride for free when presenting their season pass.
There will be ribbon cuttings by the three chambers representing Salida, Buena Vista and Gunnison. Freshies will offer their full menu as well as a grand opening special and tastings of milkshakes and smoothies. This is a great opportunity to get reacquainted with a long-existing business that has been reimagined to better suit the needs of those who recreate in the area.
The Crest will carry items to allow hikers on these trails to restock as well as receive packages to help support their journey.
“Everyone is invited to join in the grand opening activities,” said Monarch Event Coordinator Kathryn Wadsworth. “This will be a fun opportunity to check out what Monarch Mountain at the Crest has to offer and ride the Scenic Tramway to enjoy the incredible views of five mountain ranges from the top of the Continental Divide!”
U.S. 50 over Monarch Pass is also the historic Rainbow Road — so named by early Salida business people who championed the development of what was the first highway over the Continental Divide in the aftermath of the First World War. It opened the area to tourism as Americans took to the roads in their Model Ts to explore the country.
