Monarch Park campground has been closed by the Salida Ranger District while heavy equipment operates in the area. Trees must be removed due to impacts by Spruce bark beetles in the surrounding forest; the result is weakened trees that are likely to blow down in a strong windstorm causing damage to property or injury.

As part of a larger timber project, contractors will remove the hazard trees within the campground in August. The Salida Ranger District anticipates the campground will reopen fully in September and provide a safe camping experience.

Dead or dying trees on steeper slopes above Forest Service Road 231 will continue to be present until late fall.
