With snow on the way, and storm warnings posted, the Colorado Dept. of Transportation (CDOT) has just announced plans to temporarily close U.S. 50 over Monarch Pass at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve to conduct road safety work.

If you are coming or going between Salida and Gunnison on Christmas Eve, you should know that CDOT will perform avalanche mitigation operations on Monarch Pass beginning at that time.  Regional travelers and skiers leaving Monarch Mountain Ski Area should plan ahead.

Motorists should expect to encounter a lengthy delay of at least two hours. Be aware, however, this delay may be extended should unusual circumstances arise, such as an actual avalanche during the operations.

Eastbound traffic will be stopped near Sargents, Milepost 190. Westbound traffic will be stopped near Maysville, Milepost 210.
