Mother!, a play about the life of Mary Harris Jones, will be coming to the Buena Vista Public Library on Saturday, April 23, 2022. The sixty-minute one-woman play will start at 2:00 p.m., and while registration is not required, the audience will be capped at 50 attendees.

Jones, portrayed by Jan Justis, was a union organizer, child rights advocate, and self-proclaimed “hell-raiser,” and was even described as the “most dangerous woman in America” by West Virginia District Attorney Reese Blizzard.

Jones and her family immigrated to the United States from famine-struck Ireland when she was 10 years old. She would go on to dedicate her life to serving the sick and fighting for fair labor laws, eventually co-founding the Industrial Workers of the World.

This play was written by Jennifer Dempsey and Mike Broemmel, with Dempsey directing, and is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County. More information about the play and other library events can be found on the BVPL’s website
