The Chaffee County Office of Emergency Management issued an urgent notification this morning noting that U.S. Highway 50 in Poncha Springs was closed due to a high pressure gas leak.
Residents have been evacuated and gas has been shut off with no determination of when service will be restored.
Atmos Energy is working to repair the ruptured gas line, and Highway 50 has reopened, though caution is urged when traveling through the area for worker safety.
Chaffee County Undersheriff Joe McGuire reported the gas leak began about 9 a.m. today when workers for Xcel Energy damaged the gas main near CR 250 about two miles west of Poncha Springs.
