Fifty-seven people braved the extremely cold temperatures for the annual New Year’s Day 5K run in Salida. Prior to the start of the race runners signed up at the Salida Scout Hut, where energizing snacks were available. Ryan Wiegman from the Salida Recreation Department led a toast to the start the race.
Wiegman expected the race to be a little slower than in past years due to the fresh snow on the roads and trails. He anticipated the lead runners to be returning with times around 18 minutes. It turned out that Kieran McCarthy returned first with a time of 18 minutes, 52 seconds. Kristy Falcon was the first female to cross the finish line at 23 minutes, 10 seconds.
The annual 5K race is put on by the Salida Recreation Department. This year’s sponsor was Seven Thousand Foot Running Company in Salida.
