The Collegiate Peaks Stampede Rodeo is an ongoing Buena Vista tradition for 100 years. But even this venerable event couldn’t avoid a COVID-19 caused cancelation last year. Now they’re returning June 12 and 13 to the Buena Vista Fair Grounds. And they’ll be ready to rodeo. Rodeo organizer Jan Johnson anticipates a successful return.
“We are extremely excited to celebrate our 100th Rodeo and are expecting a large crowd of spectators and contestants, especially due to the shutdown of our rodeo last year due to COVID.”
This award-winning rodeo will showcase favorite events and skilled contestants. They’ve come a long way since the first rodeo when horse races were held on Main Street with a finish line near the Town Lake.
Now, 100 years later, “This rodeo is a sanctioned Colorado Professional Rodeo and brings contestants from all over. The stock that is used for this rodeo is top quality and provides a good challenge for the contestants. Mutton Bustin’ and Jr. Bull Riding are always fun and exciting events for the kids, plus a calf scramble,” said Johnson.
The rodeo begins at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, but the weekend festivities kick off with a rodeo dance at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11 at the VFW in Buena Vista. The weekend will feature a full schedule of events and appearances.

“We are excited to have Miss Rodeo Colorado, Hailey Frederiksen, in attendance at the Sunday performance and local musician Carin Mari singing the National Anthem for both Saturday and Sunday performances. We will also host Cowboy Church Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with cowboy preacher Jack Blease,” said Johnson.
There will be a total of nine classic rodeo events, ending with bull riding. Tickets, paid with cash or local check, are available at the gate or discounted tickets are available at the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce.
