The signal for KRCC public radio is back up after several days of silence. The station is part of the National Public Radio association and operates at 95.7 in Chaffee County.  Service was restored this past Wed., Aug. 26 after being down for several days from a lightning strike during a thunderstorm several days earlier.

Methodist Mountain has had more than its share of lightning strikes. Photo taken during the Decker Fire by Jan Wondra.

The lightning strike didn’t just hit the station’s broadcasting tower on Methodist Mountain, it damaged equipment in several buildings on the site.

“The lack of signal in Chaffee County is the result of a thunderstorm a week or so ago. It appears that our transmitter atop Methodist Mountain sustained a major lightning strike, and we are not sure what the solution is,” Station Manager Jeff Bieri speaking with AVV on Tuesday.

“At least five buildings on the site have excessive equipment damage” explained Bieri, who said that it might take awhile. As it turns out, the repairs came more quickly than he expected.

Station engineers received the necessary equipment, drove it up from Colorado Springs, got in a four-wheel drive, and made a 90-minute drive to their structures on the mountain, to complete repairs. They had the signal back up by around 10:40 a.m. Wed. Aug. 26.
