Tomorrow, Dec. 3, is a red-letter day in the life of Ark Valley Voice (AVV). For tomorrow is #GivingNewsDay, a national giving day all across the country for nonprofit newsrooms and small community-focused news groups such as AVV. This day, we reach out to our readers to ask for your help in keeping the news free and accessible to all. If you value our work, we hope that you will consider donating to AVV.

The mission of Ark Valley Voice is contained in these few words, “Truth has a Voice.” We think Thomas Jefferson would have approved. For it was Thomas Jefferson who said in 1823, “The only security of all is in a free press.”

News that is beholden to no one, or nothing save the truth, is the hallmark of a free society. This role was considered so important by our founding fathers that the role of the free press is enshrined in our Constitution.

This year the significance of #GivingNewsDay for Ark Valley Voice cannot be underestimated. That’s because the Colorado Media Project will provide a $5,000 NewsMatch grant (funded by the Gates Family Foundation) to AVV, if we can raise $5,000 from our readers and the local community. It’s an honor to be selected as one of the few community newsrooms in the state to receive this grant.  Your recurring monthly (or one-time donation) will be doubled in value, if made this month.

The NewsMatch grant (#newsCOneeds) doubles the impact of your giving to support local journalism! Since our start in March 2018, we have made great strides, including being accepted as a member of the Colorado Press Association and growing our readership to 41 states and more than 30 countries. We run on a shoestring and most all our funds go to pay the journalists who bring you the news and information you need to make informed decisions about your lives and this community. With your donation, you become part of the Ark Valley Voice membership of “Truth Supporters”.

The last few years have been brutal for journalists around the world, as in country after country (including here in the U.S.), journalists have been attacked or killed simply for reporting the news. In the U.S., people tend to be ho-hum about their ability to read and hear what is really going on, and increasingly opinion organizations are masquerading as real news. But in dictatorial countries such as Russia, North Korea, and China, news is controlled, disinformation campaigns are rampant, state-controlled media are the law of the land and government transparency is nonexistent. This makes the telling of truth more important than ever.

If you, as a reader or business, rely on our work and believe that truth should have a voice, we hope that you will support us now. When you donate Here on Dec. 3 through Dec. 31 you’ll see your donation doubled. Thank you on behalf of the entire AVV Crew and all of our readers!
