Organizers of CKS Paddlefest 2018, Buena Vista’s signature Memorial Day weekend kayak event, say there are more recreational activities planned for the festival than ever before. Each year Paddlefest raises funds for a local nonprofit and this year’s Paddlefest will benefit Chaffee County Search and Rescue North.
The celebration, scheduled for May 25-28, was developed and is sponsored by Colorado CKS Main Street in Buena Vista, Colorado’s largest paddle sports retailer.
“It’s our kick-off to summer fun,” said CKS spokesperson Megan Kingman. “Paddlefest is interactive and hands-on, with opportunities to demo 2018 paddle gear and choose from a host of on-water, kayak and stand-up-paddle board (SUP) workshops. This event draws thousands of paddle sport newbies and enthusiasts from around the region to Buena Vista. They come to learn, share, watch and celebrate what paddling has to offer.”
In addition to the professional and amateur kayak and SUP competitions, the event includes running, bouldering, bike races, river competitions, kids clinics and fitness and yoga workshops. There will be free flat water and whitewater demos at Town Lake, a play park on the Arkansas River, as well as the Main Street events. Organizers say attendees can get ACA certified at one of the instructor courses.
The weekend also includes music, locally produced libations and the Annual CKS Gear Swap and Store-wide Sale, one of the largest paddle sports gear swaps in the state.
