KHEN Executive Director, Chris Vann explained that more than 37 percent of Coloradoans have been struggling to afford food during the COVID-19 pandemic. This number is up 26 percent from a year ago with families and people of color hit the hardest.

“Pack the Backpack” provides a bag of nonperishable food to children to take home when school meals are unavailable. Packs are distributed every Friday at the KHEN studio at 123 East Third Street in Salida.

“Reduced services at schools and the closure of school districts throughout Colorado has meant the loss of free and reduced-price school meals for more than 350,000 students.” Vann said in a statement. “Studies show lack of adequate nutrition in childhood can have long-term impacts on health and well-being long into adulthood.”

Salida Soup is a monthly program that assists a variety of local organizations or individuals and their projects in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. The Partnership for Community Action (PfCA) creates tools to assist in strengthening the community’s shared voice and offers opportunity for the community to work and play together.

The event will be held virtually due to COVID-19 and health regulations. Click here to watch a video detailing the program and to make a donation via Donorbox.
