Most power was restored in Summit County shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, after rolling power outages across Summit County that hit early that morning. The outage affected around 5,000 people.

The impact, which included both gas and electric outages, was felt across a wide area, Both the Breckenridge and Keystone Ski Resorts, in Summit County were completely closed due to the loss of power for ski lifts, and general operations, as well as the Summit School District elementary schools and many community buildings. Copper Mountain Resort said it also experienced power outages on the mountain but did have power in some of its base areas; whether or not that was due to generators the resort has not said.

Xcel Energy worked to identify the source of the outage and to restore power, but scattered outages continued into the afternoon. According to a release from Summit County government, the source of the outage was identified as a major gas leak.
