The Rev. Kimberly Lucas, who has been selected as Bishop-elect of the Colorado Episcopal diocese, will be in Salida on Palm Sunday, April 14 to celebrate 10 a.m. mass at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, located at 349 E St., Salida.
“This is only the third church in Colorado that she has chosen to visit,” said Samar Fay, spouse of church rector Rev. Doctor Michael Fay. “We’ve invited the Grace Chapel congregation from over in Buena Vista to join us for that day, and for the potluck luncheon, we are holding following Palm Sunday services. Then she’ll be traveling down to Crestone to celebrate a 3 p.m. mass at Little Shepherd of the Hills.”
Lucas was chosen as the 11th Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Colorado during the 13th Annual Convention at Saint Johns Cathedral in Denver Oct. 27, 2018. She comes to Colorado from Washington D.C., where she served since January 2012 as rector of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. She is attending an Episcopal Youth conference at the Ranch in Buena Vista this weekend prior to her visit to Salida.
Lucas, who goes by the first name of Kym, apparently hasn’t yet decided what title she’ll be known by when she formally becomes the Bishop of Colorado in May. “It might be Mother Kym, it might be Bishop Lucas, we don’t know,” said Fay. “We’re just honored to have her visit us so soon after arriving in Colorado.”
Lucas will be ordained as bishop May 19, 2019, in Saint John’s Cathedral in Denver, with presiding Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry presiding.
