Around 1:00 p.m. on July 4, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, the Chaffee County Communications Center received a report of a man who had been shot in the chest approximately 1.5 miles west of Poncha Springs on Highway 50.

As deputies responded, Chaffee County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) met the victim and his wife who had responded towards Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in their personal vehicle. Chaffee County EMS then continued to the hospital with the victim.

Investigation disclosed that the victim and his wife were looking at a parcel of land for sale in the area of CR 250 and West U.S. Hwy 50 when the male was shot in the chest.

Several parties were located target practicing in a field south of the victim’s location. It is believed that the victim was struck by a ricochet from the weapon of one of the target shooters.

The victim has not yet been identified, nor is his condition known at this time. Nor has analysis been done linking the bullet to any of the weapons at the site of the target shooter area.

This investigation remains open and active at this time.
