This is the time of year when the Salvation Army collection kettles and the ubiquitous bell ringers stand at the entrances of retail shops to collect funds for county residents in need. In Chaffee County, the collection timeframe began November 24 and runs through December 24.
The Chaffee County Salvation Army still needs teams of volunteers to ring bells; both individuals and groups that want to volunteer at the two collections locations in Chaffee County.
The Salvation Army collection points are Walmart in Salida and City Market in Buena Vista.
If you or your organization can volunteer, contact Lea Johnson at 719-395-0344, extension 1000.
The bell-ringing program is organized and runs as part of the Chaffee Department of Human Services. More than 90 percent of all funds raised stay right in the county to help local residents.
Last year the program collected more than $18,000 to help county residents in need. The department reports that the funds helped 23 local residents and families.
