Wildfire season is upon us and the lands of the San Luis Valley are not immune

Rio Grande National Forest Acting Forest Fire Management Officer Derrick Rader will discuss wildfires and what is being done to prevent them in an online program to be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, in partnership with the San Juan Mountains Association.

Those who join the presentation will discover more about the 2023 Fire Year priorities: protecting lives, property, and natural resources, and how everyone plays a valuable role.

This event is part of the Rio Grande National Forest’s Forest Specialist Series, a once-monthly online presentation to share information with the community and to allow residents to learn more about their local public lands.

Derrick has 26 seasons of fire experience. A Colorado native, he is a graduate of Technical Fire Management in Bothell, WA, and he has been on Interagency hotshot and helitack crews and engines.
