The Salida Business Alliance has notified the city of Salida and school children at Longfellow Elementary School that participants in Salida’s Nov. 23 Parade of Lights will not be allowed to distribute candy or other items during the parade.
“This is all about safety,” said SBA President Vickie Sue Vigil. “This is a night parade so visibility is limited, and the actual parade participants are thankful because they feel unsafe with so many kids running into the street.”
A press release from SBA states, “We feel we must take action to avoid any accidents like those that have occurred in other communities. Each year it gets more dangerous, and we do not want to be a community with a parade crisis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
Because of the construction at Natural Grocers, Santa will be located on the street patio at Here’s the Scoop, where he will see children following the lighting of Christmas Mountain.
The press release indicates the theme for this year’s parade will be ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and closes with, “Thank you for your understanding and being part of this wonderful tradition.”
