As the holiday season draws near, the City of Salida together with the Salida Business Alliance (SBA) is currently planning events so the community can celebrate in a safe way. This year the traditional Parade of Lights and fireworks have been canceled, but a newly-envisioned  Holiday Fest will offer both new and old experiences reimagined for COVID-19 times.

Holiday Fest will take place from November 27 to December 18. The lighting of Christmas Mountain will still happen. The week of December 21, contests and competitions will take place. Plans are still in the works. Currently, the city plans on lighting the mountain Friday, November 27. Holiday Park will also be lit on the same day.

There will be a window display and home decorating challenge. The challenge will be held virtually with participants tagging the Salida Business Alliance on Instagram by December 18.

For community members who do not have Instagram, SBA will accept photos via email. The board will pick the top five businesses and homes and plans to announce a winner on December 21. Prizes will then be awarded to the winners. The contest is open to all business members.

SBA will also partner with local businesses to make a scavenger hunt around Salida. The goal of this event is to be a family or couple’s activity. Letters will be in storefront windows and participants will try to complete the phrase “Salida Holiday Fest.”

SBA is looking for 17 businesses to participate in displaying the letters. In order to participate, businesses will give a donation either in the form of a gift card or product, valued between $25 and $50. 17 participants in the scavenger hunt will be randomly drawn and receive one of the donated prizes.

This year visiting Santa will look a little different. SBA’s goal is to have a mailbox set up by November 28 so children can drop off their letters to Santa. They hope to put the letters in alphabetical order and have Santa read them via Zoom which would be recorded and posted on the SBA YouTube Channel. The board is still working out exactly how Santa visits will take place this year but tell the community “rest assured, Santa will make it to Salida”.
