Once again the city of Salida has been included in a multi-page special section celebrating our winter wonderland; this time an article by Jennifer Broome about the best 3-day “Ski & Soak” adventures in small towns. The feature story runs in the January–February 2020 issue of Encompass Magazine; the AAA Colorado publication that celebrates the adventures and experiences to be had all across the Colorado Rockies.
Salida is included with Glenwood Springs and Pagosa Springs in the ranks of great small communities combining winter skiing and local hot springs. Each town has a nearby ski area and one or more hot springs areas.
In the case of Glenwood Springs, it’s the boutique ski resort known as Sunlight Mountain Resort, where kids 12 and under ski free.
The area not only has the famed Glenwood Springs, but the nearby Iron Mountain Hot Springs and the Yampah Vapor Caves.
Pagosa Springs is hard by Wolf Creek Pass whose ski area was the first solar-powered ski area. It is known for the hospitality of The Springs Resort. It’s very name “Pagosah” was given to it by the Ute Indians, which in Ute means “healing waters.”
Here in Chaffee County, Salida is the quintessential ski town near Monarch Mountain, which this year is celebrating its 80th birthday.
The article highlights many places to stop and explore in town, as well as featuring the grandeur of the setting and the multiple hot springs pools of Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort.
