A Salida man died Thursday morning, March 4, when his vehicle struck a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow on Highway 285.
John Daugherty, 46, was pronounced dead on the scene after the incident, which occurred at 8:04 a.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Plow driver Thomas McLain, 54, of Buena Vista, was actively plowing the roadway near mile marker 140 in the Nathrop area when Daugherty’s 2014 Honda CRV struck the plow head-on, then traveled off the west side of the road where it rolled two and three-quarter times. Daugherty was wearing his seatbelt.
Both men were the sole occupants of their vehicles. Overnight, Chaffee County had received a few inches of snow, necessitating snow plow activity.
