Salida Mayoral candidate Dan Shore is running unopposed in the Nov. 2 Coordinated Election. But With the upcoming election. But Ark Valley Voice complied chose to provide him with the same set of questions it asked of those candidates running for Salida City council and his answers to our second set of questions are below.

What will you do to ensure the progress and gains made for workforce housing/affordable housing will continue in the future without politics?

“I feel like we are moving in the right direction on housing and am excited about the incoming council.  There seems to be a real commitment and continued focus on addressing our housing issues.  We all recognize the urgency of the situation and understand that it supersedes any political considerations.”

What specifically will you ask community members to do to help support waste diversion and sustainability?

“In regard to waste diversion and sustainability, we have our work cut out for us.  While we recognized the challenges that Angel of Shavano was facing, the hope was the increased subsidies would allow the business to continue to be viable.  With their exit from the business, we felt like exploring private options made the most sense.  With that said I believe we need to remain in dialogue with the county and community partners about how we can best support our waste diversion and sustainability initiatives.”

Other than tourism, what types of local industries or new businesses would you favor pursuing job growth and economic stability?

“In regard to attracting businesses and new industries what I believe is most important is continuing to work closely with our partners at the Chaffee County Economic Development Corp.  They are a tremendous resource.”

Would you support a vaccine or testing mandate for city staff?

“Your question regarding a vaccine mandate is an interesting one. We continue to monitor the situation and are relying on the federal government for guidance. We have had a vaccine incentive program in place for employees since April.”

What question have we not asked that is top of mind for why you are running for Mayor?

“The issue I remain most concerned about is workforce housing.  We are hearing from more and more businesses about their staffing challenges.  And so much of that is driven by our housing issues.  Fortunately, we have close to 100 acres on the Vandaveer property and are getting ready to send it out an RFP proposal for a master plan that will involve community input.  If we get it right that property has the potential to help solve for a lot of our housing challenges.”
