With the State of Colorado planning for the next phase of reopening (to be called “Protect Your Neighbor”) from the coronavirus pandemic known as COVID-19, more facilities will start to reopen with strict guidelines. One anxiously-awaited reopening is at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, which is set to open no later than June 22.

In a statement released by Diesel Post. Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, Post addressed the changes the pool will face and its commitment to the Salida swim team.

While all recreation and aquatic classes were canceled due to the pandemic,  the swim team, in particular, has been impacted by COVID-19, which eliminated any opportunity for regular practice. Post says the Parks and Recreation Department has tried to support them the best they can during these uncertain times.

Currently, the Salida Parks and Rec Department is completing deep cleaning, finishing maintenance and the improvement projects are close to completion. Some projects will finish after re-opening but will not impact access.

The department is optimistic that the facility’s plan for reopening will be accepted by the county. Specific COVID-19 updates were complete by June 6, however, they acknowledge that the overall project may not be complete until after June 22.

According to Governor Polis’s current executive order, indoor pools are allowed to open with a maximum of ten people in the same room.

Things will be different at the pool when it reopens.

In order to follow health guidelines locker rooms will be closed, and only ten people at a time (including the lifeguard and coach for the swim team) will be allowed in the pool. Increased sanitation measures will be in effect. This is plan A.

Due to the ever-changing nature of this pandemic, the Salida Parks and Recreation department is already forming a Plan B —  in case another shift needs to be made if the county experiences a COVID-19 surge. The Salida Parks and Recreation Department will be publishing the instructions for the facility soon and looks forward to the sound of swimmers in the pool once again.

The Parks and Recreation Department says it will be continually updating their social media @salidaparksandrec as well as at the department’s website www.salidarec.com with new information on facilities and programming. Those with questions should contact the Director of Parks and Recreation,  diesel.post@cityofsalida.com.
