The reopening of schools has been a hot topic among communities both locally and nationally. As COVID-19 cases rise throughout the country and questions surrounding the safety of in-person classes arise, Salida Schools says that it remains consistent with keeping the school openings as safe to the community as possible.

Wednesday Aug. 19 is Salida School District’s first day of the 2020-2021 school year for students. Many families have been put on waitlists for in-person learning to keep facility, staff and students safe.

Superintendent David Blackburn has confirmed that Fourth, Seventh, Ninth and Tenth grade enrollments for in person instruction are full, and will now roll to waiting lists for spots in online programs.

With a limited number of seats that are safely spaced in the rooms for in-person instruction, those grades have exceeded their maximum safe number. Any new students will be offered space digitally until or unless there is an opening for them.

According to the district, 172 students are currently enrolled in the Salida School District online program.
