Should the Salida city clerk and city treasurer be appointed instead of elected?
Salida currently elects its city clerk and city treasurer, but in recent city elections a lack of interest in the positions has necessitated that city council appoint the clerk and treasurer.
Colorado statutes allow for the city clerk and city treasurer to be appointed if city voters approve a ballot initiative authorizing the appointment of these officials. Voters in a number of Colorado’s statutory cities have passed similar measures.
If passed, these ballot questions will not affect the term of the current city clerk and treasurer.
The benefit of passing the two ballot questions would be the avoidance of vacancies in these city offices, thereby ensuring that the duties and responsibilities of the clerk and treasurer are performed without interruption.
Rejection of these ballot questions would continue the current practice of electing the city clerk and treasurer. The benefit of a “no” vote would be to ensure that Salida citizens have a voice in choosing officials to serve in these offices if candidates run for the offices.
Ballot Question B reads:
Without affecting the terms of the current city clerk, shall the city of Salida change the office of city clerk to be an appointed rather than elected position, with appointment to be made by the city council pursuant to §C.R.S. 31-4-107(4)(a)?
Ballot Question C reads:
“Without affecting the terms of the current city treasurer, shall the city of Salida change the office of city treasurer to be an appointed rather than elected position, with appointment to be made by the city council pursuant to §C.R.S. 31-4-107(4)(a)?”
