The Salida Winter Homeless Shelter will open on November 1. Chaffee County Hospitality Inc. formerly known as the Chaffee County Homeless Coalition will operate two winter shelters this season. One will be for men and the other for women.
Organizers say that rarely a night goes by without someone needing a place to sleep in the county. In the winter this is not a matter of convenience, but often of life and death.
The Men’s shelter will be at the Lighthouse, located at 346 G Street, with space for ten men. The shelter for women will be at the First Christian Church, located at 302 Fourth Street with space for ten women. Families will be lodged in local motels.
The shelter will be open from 8:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. from November 1 to April 30. Chaffee County Housing Inc. is seeking to raise $76,000 which will be used to pay night staff, purchase motel vouchers, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, tents, food and other needed cold weather supplies.
