In what could be the most prolific child sexual predation instance in the history of Chaffee County, the multiple cases against Herbert Lucas Scott begins its trial phase on Thursday, August 25 in the 11th Judicial District Court in Salida. The case will be tried as a jury trial.

Herbert Lucas Scott surrendered to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 11, 2021.

Scott is accused of sexually assaulting multiple children at the Pony Patch Ranch and Daycare Center, which was owned and run by his mother Melissa Boyd Scott.

The victims’ ages range from nine to 18-years-old. All the victims in the case were clients/visitors at the ranch. Little information is available publicly, due to the age of most of the alleged victims.

What was originally referenced as an “obscenity case” was first reported in August 2020. After the initial charges,  another case of sexual assault of an at-risk individual was added.

Scott faces nine counts of Sexual Assault on a Child by one in Position of Trust (Felony 3), in addition to two counts of obscenity. The charges followed a comprehensive investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The Pony Patch was a popular children’s equestrian riding club run by Chaffee resident Melissa Scott at the Doolittle Ranch. It shut down in August 2020 following the initial charges that month. The Doolittle Ranch was sold some 18 months ago and Melissa Scott reportedly moved out-of-state. It is expected that Boyd-Scott will be called to testify.

No less than 42 court docket dates, including advisements pertaining to the charges against the 22-year-old (born 10/27/99) are listed for the next few weeks. The jury trial begins at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, August 25 at Chaffee Combined Court located  142 Crestone Avenue. It is expected to continue for seven days, through Friday, Sept. 2, at the cusp of the labor Day weekend.
