Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze ordered Stage 2 fire restrictions today for unincorporated Chaffee County, effective immediately.

Stage 2 restrictions forbid building, maintaining or attending any open fire, including charcoal fires and charcoal grilling. Propane, liquefied petroleum gas and other liquid-fueled stoves are permissible if they can be turned off.

County fire restrictions do not include U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management land, the city of Salida or the town of Buena Vista.

Both the City of Salida and the Town of Buena Vista have their own ordinances that pertain to fire restrictions and they should be consulted as to their restrictions. At this time U.S. Forest Service and BLM lands remain under Stage 1 fire restrictions.

Due to the very dry conditions across the county, it is imperative that all residents and visitors adhere to these restrictions. The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office will be vigilant in enforcing these restrictions.

These restrictions will remain in place until conditions improve to the point that make less restrictive activities safe once again.

Anyone who observes any open fire is encouraged to report the fire to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office at 719-539-2596.
