As 2020 election mail ballots continued to be returned on Sunday, one reality is becoming clear. While we might know the results of the 2020 election within our own Chaffee County on election night, election officials across several states are cautioning that it is unlikely that we will know the results of the national election Tuesday night.
That’s because while the deadline to cast ballots is 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3 no matter what time zone you live in, that doesn’t mean that by Midnight all those votes are going to be counted. State election rules are uneven.
Especially in battleground states such as Pennsylvania (which has 67 counties, each one running its own election, just as Colorado counties do), election officials can’t even start the laborious preparations to count the ballots until Election Day, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Oct. 19 that ballots that arrive as late as Friday will be accepted.
As of Sunday evening, Chaffee County received 184 mail ballots, for a total vote count of 11,632 ballots returned by registered voters. That amounts to a 76.3 percent response rate.
