“The real problem is that nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and adolescents are physiologically more vulnerable to addiction. The earlier in childhood an individual uses nicotine-containing products, the stronger the addiction and the more difficult it is to quit. Over 99 percent of commercial vaping products contain nicotine, and high school students who vape are 3.6 times more likely to be smoking cigarettes one year later.”

Concerns over lung health and youth are driving educational efforts in Chaffee County aimed at discouraging vaping as well as tobacco and cannabis use … Using research developed at the University of Washington, a risk and protective factor assessment work group identified three risk and three protective factors as priorities for community planning. These included the availability of substances; early initiation of substance use and the attitudes and involvement of parents in substance use.

As alarming as the diseases being reported are, the prevelance of vaping behavior is even more shocking. According to the 2017 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, 27 percent of Colorado teens report vaping behavior, which is the highest vaping rate in the nation. Chaffee County youth vaping rates are even higher – 44 percent of Chaffee County youth report that they have tried or are vaping.
