The efforts of the firefighters to contain the Decker Fire are not lost on this community. Nor it seems, on the youngest of our citizens. Tonight, Oct. 10, two third-graders presented donations to the night crew firefighters who were briefing for their shift, fighting the Decker Fire.

On Oct. 5, the two from Salida’s Longfellow Elementary, Neil McCelland and Sophie Almeida, held a lemonade stand for three hours in front of Ruby Blues, across the street from the Ark Valley Voice office.

McCelland and Almeida said that they wanted to do something for the firefighters, but didn’t have the air quality conditions to set up their lemonade stand. The opportunity to sell from their lemonade stand came from lemonade donated by KW Restoration.

The two youngsters raised a little more than $176 to put towards the purchase of Gatorade and CLIFF bars for the firefighters fighting the Decker Fire.

Then on Oct. 10, the pair presented their donations to the night crew firefighters who were receiving their briefing for before their shift. They rolled into the briefing area at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds with a red wagon, decorated with large ‘”thank you” signs.

They were welcomed with special recognition from Night Incident Commander Mark Giacolleto and by the firefighters, who shook hands with McCelland and Almeida as they came off the stage. The room was full of smiles.
