Brett McMurry

Brett McMurry was sworn in Thursday, June 14, as the newest member of the Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District board of directors.

McMurry is one of two directors representing conservancy district Division 3, which corresponds to Buena Vista School District R-31.

Former county commissioner Dennis Giese declined to reapply for the seat, which he had held for more than a year following the resignation of Frank McMurry, who served on the board for 34 years.

Brett is Frank’s son, and he continues the family tradition of ranching in Chaffee County.

Three other directors were also sworn in at the June 14 meeting – Greg Felt (Division 2, Salida School District R-32-J), Mannie Colon (Division 5, Fremont School District RE-1) and Bill Donley (Division 4, Custer County). Felt, Colon and Donley have served multiple terms as directors and were re-appointed to continue representing their respective divisions.

Following the swearing-in, board members voted to retain the same officers – Bob Senderhauf as chairman, Tim Canterbury as vice chairman, Felt as secretary and Tom Goodwin as treasurer.

The board then voted to appoint all directors to serve on the Water Activity Enterprise Committee along with district General Manager Terry Scanga and retired attorney Ken Baker, who played a key role in founding the conservancy district.
