Good people do good things during bad times for people who need help. That’s surely the moral of the story that has brought together Chaffee County government, Chaffee Shuttle,  Heart of the Rockies Home Health &  Hospice and the Chaffee County Community Foundation in a volunteer shopper program that can help protect the county’s senior citizens and other vulnerable populations, during this time of the coronavirus pandemic.

After carefully working out the logistics of the service, which involves coordinating the volunteer efforts of shuttle service drivers and other volunteers to take the grocery lists and do the grocery shopping, this new volunteer effort will launch Monday, April 13.

“It’s designed so that vulnerable seniors do not need to leave their homes,” explained one of the volunteer coordinators, Chris Martin, to the Chaffee Board of County Commissioners during a planning session. “The start-up money has been provided by Chaffee County Community Foundation (CCCF).”

Here’s how the program will work:

  1. Seniors in need of groceries call Tambra Stutes at Heart of Rockies Home Health & Hospice (HRHHH) at 314-201-1450 to put in their request for groceries.
  2. Volunteer shoppers will be needed! Please call Chris Martin 719-239-0023 or with name, full address and phone number.
  3. Shopping will be done for Salida/Poncha on Mondays & Wednesdays and in Buena Vista on Tues. & Thurs.
  4. Shopping day… Chaffee Shuttle will pick up the volunteer shopper and drop them off at the grocery store. The volunteer shopper will purchase groceries on their list with a prepaid gift card to pay for the groceries. Shopper will be driven to the senior’s home for delivery inside, or at the front door.
  5. The citizen will be encouraged to pay for the groceries with a check payable to Chaffee County Community Foundation. The monies will be deposited back into CCCF’s Senior Shopping account as a donation.

While the initial funding has been provided by CCCF, and Chaffee Shuttle is donating three weeks of shuttle and driver time, the effort could benefit from additional donations. Those can be made to:  or 719-204-5071.
