Wild Connections will host a Badger Creek Day Hike “BLM Wild Lands Outing” from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 16.

Badger Creek, along the Arkansas River between Royal Gorge and Salida, is an area with interesting geological features and diverse biology, representing a complete ecosystem, with approximately 3,000 feet of elevation differential, comprising several complete life zones.

In fact, the area of the day hike has been identified by Wild Connections as “lands with wilderness characteristics” warranting protection. A portion of this area is also currently proposed for wilderness designation under the Colorado Wilderness Act. This moderate hike of about five miles with an elevation change of approximately 1,000 feet will explore a portion of this area west of the Sand Gulch Road looking for signs of human impacts. This trip is sponsored by Wild Connections and Central Colorado Wilderness Coalition. Maximum is 10 participants.

Participants will carpool from Colorado Springs (carpool meeting time 8:00 a.m.), or meet near the trailhead. Single drivers may caravan along with the carpool cars. Pre-trip registration is required by 5:00 p.m. on October 15. To register and obtain trip information, contact Jim Lockhart at 719-385-0045 or jlock@datawest.net.

Participants should bring lunch, plenty of water and snacks, clothing suitable for the weather conditions, including rain gear, and footwear suitable for hiking off-trail. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, hikers will be practicing safe health precautions.

Participants are requested to be fully vaccinated. Wild Connections asks people to travel wearing masks if they are carpooling with those who are not members of their household.
