If you walked into the Division of Motor Vehicle (DMV) offices to renew your driver’s license this morning, chances are you weren’t able to accomplish that task. This morning, the Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators reported an outage stretching nationwide due to “a loss in cloud connectivity”.

The association, which is a non-governmental group that provides software to the DMV offices reported that the nearly two-hour outage meant that it could not process messages, transactions of driver licenses, or vehicle licenses. It is working internally to try to determine what caused the outage, which remains unknown at this time.

DMV office issued a warning about the outages across social media this morning, in states including New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles.

What could have cause this loss of connectivity, and across such a broad geographic range is under investigation.
