  • The I-70 Floyd Hill work began with a ground breaking in October, 2022.
  • Traffic is being rerouted off U.S. 50 in Gunnison County due to the safety closure today of a bridge over the Blue Mesa Reservoir at Dillon Pinnacles.
  • The Department of the Interior announced a final rule to help guide the balanced management of America’s public lands.
  • US Senator Michael Bennet is inviting members of the public to attend a meet and greet from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Boathouse (228 North F Street) in Salida.
  • A FREE E-Waste event is coming to the Chaffee County Fairgrounds from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday May 4th.

  • The Colorado Court of Appeals handed down a decision that the case filed in 2021 by Dr. Eric Coomer, former Vice President of Product Strategy for Dominion Voting Systems has a right to proceed to trial.
  • In their work session held on Monday, April 15th, the Salida City Council took a tour of the Scout Wave.
  • The Salida City Council heard updates from City Attorney Nina Wilson on the lawsuit brought by the Town of Poncha Springs over the sewer tap moratorium.
  • A discussion between the Chaffee Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) and the Salida School District regarding a land purchase for a proposed new school building.
  • The film“High Country”, which had its first showing at the Salida SteamPlant on April 17th, will have a repeat showing on Wednesday, April 24th.
  • April 22nd, the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) presents “The History of Public Lands” with Walt Dabney at 6:00 p.m. at A Church in Salida.

  • On April 5th, the Senate gave initial sign-off to the FY 2024-2025 state budget.
  • The Chaffee Board of County Commissioners (BoCC), at their meeting on Tuesday, April 9th, moved  to conditionally approve the Cleora North Planned Development Final Plat.
  • Chaffee BoCC issued a letter to the community on the so-called “non-sanctuary county” issue that has cropped up across the region.
  • There have been three avalanches in Chaffee County along county roadways since the last major local snowfall.
  • The top 20 local finalists in the 2024 Buena Vista (BV) Civics Bee will compete live and in-person at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum.

  • Unofficial results are in for the municipal elections held in the towns of Buena Vista and Poncha Springs on April 2nd.
  • The official elections results will not be available until April 11th.
  • The Sangre de Cristo Electric Association has announced its upcoming 2024 election for the Board of Directors, scheduled for Monday, June 3rd.
  • On April 1st, Fading West came together with town staff, the mayor, and Buena Vista trustees, to officially break ground on the Carbonate Street project.
  • And finally, Monarch Mountain Ski Resort announced on Wednesday, April 3rd that it is extending its ski season until Sunday, April 21st.

  • Wayles Martin was sworn in Monday, March 25th as a newly appointed Trustee on the Salida City Council.
  • Salida City Council will be holding a retreat this coming Friday, March 29th at the Hutchinson Homestead.
  • The towns of Buena Vista and Poncha Springs will both be holding municipal elections next week on April 2nd.
  • Chaffee County Community Foundation (CCCF) announced it is recommending grant awards to 33 local nonprofit organizations with $146,686 in funding from the Spring grant cycle.
  • Chaffee County Economic Development Corporation and its Central Mountain Entrepreneurs are hosting live music immediately following its Powder Pitch Event at Monarch Mountain on Friday, March 29th.

  • Governor Jared Polis signed into law a piece of bipartisan legislation, SB 24-002 it grants local governments the authority to create property tax rebates.
  • The Salida City Council appointed Wales Martin to fill the Ward 3 council seat vacated in February by Harald Kasper.
  • The Salida City Council announced Tuesday, March 19th that is shifting gears on the parking management contract that it signed with Interstate Parking just six weeks ago.
  • The BoCC voted to deny the application to hold a music concert at The Meadows in Buena Vista, in mid-September, 2024
  • Colorado’s premier Grateful Dead cover band, Easy Jim, will be lighting up the dance floor this Saturday, March 23rd at Tres Litros Beer Company in Salida.

  • CDOT has issued a serious winter travel alert that severe winter weather is expected to hit statewide tonight, through Friday.
  • The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County (LWVCC) hosted a candidate forum to introduce the candidates for the Town of Buena Vista (BV) Board of Trustees (BoT) on Tuesday, March 5th.
  • Fisheries biologist Rosalee Reese presents “Aquatic & Riparian Systems on the Rio Grande National Forest” in this month’s Forest Specialist Series, at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27.

  • The Salida City Council moved to close F Street again to vehicular traffic this summer, Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Applications for the Ward 3 vacancy caused by Harald Kasper’s resignation  will be accepted until March 14, with candidate interviews to take place on March 19.
  • On Super Tuesday, President Joseph Biden and ex-President Donald Trump won the lion’s share of votes for their respective parties’ Presidential primaries.
  • Caucuses for Democratic and Republican candidates are also being held this week.
  • Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center broke ground on Tuesday, February 27th for the Delnay Guest House.
  • Artspace and the City of Salida held a second community Open House event at the Salida Scout Hut to unveil floorplans and architectural prototypes for what is known as Salida Space to Create.
  • “The Holdovers” will be showing at the Salida SteamPlant, 220 W. Sackett Street, on Saturday, March 9th at 6 p.m.

  • Results of the Chaffee County Point-in-Time Count are in.
  • Governor Jared Polis and cabinet members released the second version of the climate action plan to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution in half by 2030.
  • Republican candidate for President Nikki Haley made a visit to Colorado on Tuesday, February 27th
  • Salida High School Visual Arts student, Opal Juba’s stippling piece titled “Jackson” was awarded a Regional Gold Key Award.

  • Jared Polis announced funding to support the growth of eight modular housing manufacturers across Colorado.
  • Colorado House passed legislation to prohibit local governments from implementing or enforcing residential occupancy limits except for health and safety reasons.
  • February 17th, the Deerhammer Tasting Room in Buena Vista will be live screening the 2024 National Paddling Film Festival (NPFF).

  • Chaffee Board of County Commissioners heard a report from AT&T representatives on the causes for a multi-day service outage earlier this winter.
  • Chaffee BOCC approved the Cleora North Planned Development Concept Plan.
  • Colorado House on Tuesday passed bipartisan legislation to prevent suicides by regulating sales of sodium nitrite products.
  • Two musical events coming up this weekend at the Lariat.

  • Visionary Broadband has been tentatively awarded two grants totaling $9.1 million.
  • The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Buena Vista Police executed a search warrant, and recovered approximately 65 grams of Fentanyl, approximately 600 pills, and numerous firearms.
  • Arkansas Valley Music and Dance (AVMAD) is inviting the public to the Buena Vista Community Contra Dance from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3rd.

  • The Chaffee County Democrats are putting up two candidates to run for open seats on the Chaffee Board of County Commissioners this year.
  • In the town of Buena Vista, there are six candidates for the open trustee positions.
  • A historic 21.3 million people signed up for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace coverage during the 2024 open enrollment year.
  • Governor Polis took action to help prepare Colorado for its sesquicentennial, or 150th birthday in 2026,
  • Colorado Mountain College MC plans an open house for the community at their Salida facility on Friday Jan. 26th.

  • The Salida City Council held a work session and regular meeting on Tuesday, January 16th.
  • On Wednesday, January 17th, work began on the Scout Wave, Salida’s newest whitewater park feature,  located near the Scout Hut in Riverside Park.
  • The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that over the past several weeks they have investigated several burglaries across the county.
  • The Chaffee Board of County Commissioners approved the application for a multi-year permit application for Bonfire Entertainment at The Meadows in Buena Vista.

  • The 2024 election will see three open seats in Republican-held Congressional Districts this year in Colorado.
  • Speaker Julie McCluskie delivered her opening remarks for the second regular session of the 74th General Assembly of the Colorado legislature with a focus on Housing, Public Safety, Education, and Water.
  • The League of Women Voters (LWV) has taken up the cause of women’s reproductive health in Colorado, beginning a petition process it calls “Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom”.
  • Bob Hickey will do a photo presentation and lecture on his recent trip to Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

  • The Salida City Council unanimously voted to approve Ordinance 2023-20, the impact review and major subdivision for the Flour Mill Planned Development at 6907 County Road 105.
  • The Chaffee Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) received an overview of a Buena Vista (BV) Childcare Needs Assessment and “Design Lab” proposal.
  • Brandon Olsen, aged 44, shot out a window on the east side of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center in Denver.
  • On January 3rd, several state capitol buildings across the United States received bomb threats.
  • The Ski with a Naturalist program at Monarch Mountain begins on Friday, January 5th.
