This week the Colorado Media Project (CMP), and the Colorado News Collaborative announced the recipients for the 2021 #newsCONeeds grant. Ark Valley Voice is honored to announce that it has been selected as one of the 26 “#NewsCONeeds year-end grant recipients.

The selection of this year’s 26 local newsroom recipients is based on the news organization’s ability to meet the mission of delivering “news that Colorado needs”. Together, these Colorado newsrooms are poised to collectively raise more than a quarter-million dollars to strengthen and sustain their coverage of local governments, businesses, schools and communities — but to do this – each of us news organizations need help.

Between Nov. 30 (“Giving NewsDay”) and Dec. 31, 2021, each newsroom can earn up to $5,000 from CMP, in a dollar-for-dollar match aimed at inspiring individual giving to support long-term sustainability of our public-service journalism — which informs and engages communities and strengthens civic engagement statewide.

This will be the third time that Ark Valley Voice has been selected to participate in the news match challenge, which has already helped fund this small, free and fiesty newsroom with nearly $30,000 of public support for unbiased, local journalism.

2021 is the fourth consecutive year that CMP is offering the matching grant challenge, which is modeled after the national NewsMatch campaign that helped nonprofit newsrooms across the country raise a record-breaking $47 million in 2020. Last year this #newsCOneeds challenge supporting 24 CMP grantees (including AVV) collectively raised more than $578,000 in the month of December.

Colorado’s #newsCOneeds matching challenge is unique in the nation, in that any locally owned, locally operated Colorado news organization that is regularly publishing nonpartisan local news may apply — regardless of business model or distribution method.

Readers will be seeing more about this year’s NewsMatch Challenge and AVV’s hopes to outpace our previous Newsmatch challenges as we get closer to the Nov. 30 kick-off.
