While the library will be closed for New Year’s Day on Monday, January 1, and on Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 15, they have a full schedule to fill the first month of 2024.

Winter break BINGO ends on January 6.

Family Take & Make begins on January 8. This month’s project celebrates the snowflake season by cutting traditional shapes, growing crystal snowflakes, and studying snowflakes “like Snowflake Bentley.”

Featured Events

Brush and Palette Knife (Teens and Adults)

3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10

This landscape painting class is led by a local artist and offers the opportunity to try new tools.

Seed Exchange and Winter Sowing Tips

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13

Participants will learn techniques to sow seeds in winter, and exchange seeds with neighbors. Bring only seeds collected in the past two years that have been properly stored.

Intro to Electric Vehicles (EVs)

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 18

Participants will learn about electric vehicles, such as charging, incentives, and the benefits and challenges of EV ownership. Snacks will be provided.

Virtual Author Talks

Rebecca Serle 

6:00 p.m. to 7:00  p.m. Wednesday, January 10

Rebecca Serle will discuss her journey writing epic love stories and teach the “love story formula.” She will discuss her New York Times bestselling novels, One Italian Summer, In Five Years, The Dinner List, and more.

Serle will also briefly discuss her forthcoming novel (due out on March 5, 2024) Expiration Dates in a special preview.

Rajiv Nagaich

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23

Elder Law Attorney and bestselling author Rajiv Nagaich will talk about how to avoid hidden traps in retirement planning advice.

Over his 20-plus years of experience in United States elder law, Rajiv developed a step-by-step guide to retirement planning by connecting the various dots of the retirement planning process. The LifePlanning approach is a system that brings together legal, financial, and housing issues into a coordinated effort.

Rajiv will explain why “retirement plan failure” happens and how it can be avoided.

Dr. Robert Lustig

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30

Pediatric neuroendocrinologist and one of the leaders of the “anti-sugar” movement Dr. Robert Lustig will challenge the current healthcare paradigm in this discussion.

Teen and Adult Events

Ukulele Skill Building

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturdays, January 6, January 20, February 3, and February 17.

This four week class will allow attendees to learn to play or practice ukulele skills. Skill building will run for an hour with a jam session following at 11:00 a.m.

Journaling Workshop (teens and adults)

4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, January 8

Participants will channel creativity and explore the benefits of journaling during the workshop. Handmade journals will be provided.

Qigong

5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays January 2 and January 16

Participants will complete exercises to optimize energy in the body, mind, and spirit to improve health and overall well-being.

Align & Flow Yoga

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays January 8, January 22, and January 29

An all-level, beginner-friendly yoga class to find strength, stillness, and peace. Attendees should bring their own yoga mat if possible.

Game Night – Family and Party Games – Teens and Adults

7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 12

A game night for all ages. Participants can try out favorite party/ family games. From 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. there will be a family focus. There will be a short presentation on games and why they are beneficial.

From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the focus will shift to teens and adults. Games keeper Gary Johnson will present and facilitate some of the latest releases in board games.

Use the south parking lot entrance after 6:00 p.m.

Make a Gift Box

1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23

Participants will fold paper and fabric into unique boxes, “perfect for your Valentine.”

Pilates / Meditation

11:30 a.m. on Thursdays January 11 and January 25

Participants will seek to deepen the connection between mind and body with a twist on traditional Pilates. Exercises will begin with breathwork and guided meditation before moving into mat Pilates to improve strength and flexibility.

 Attendees should bring a mat if they have one available.

Great Decisions

4:30 p.m. recurring on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month beginning on January 25

America’s largest discussion program on world affairs comes to the Buena Vista Public Library. Each meeting will focus on a different topic of global importance.

Intro to Fly Tying: Part 1

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27

Participants will learn the art and science of fly tying with all supplies provided. A pizza lunch will also be provided.

This is a two-part workshop. Part 2 will take place from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3.

Youth Events

Tunes for Tots – Ages 1 to 5

10:00 a.m. on Mondays.

There will be no class on Monday January 1 or Monday January 15 due to holidays.

Participants will play, sing, and move to the music. Kids will learn how to sing on pitch, keep a beat, and play instruments.

Kids Into Learning Things (KILT) – Ages 5 to 12

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Tuesdays January 2 and 16

Elementary students will experience STEAM, team-building challenges, and the fine arts in a collaborative setting. The session ends with sharing favorite board and card games.

Reading to Rover – All Ages

3:30 p.m. every Wednesday

Friendly dogs may sit with people while they read. Any reading level or age is welcome to read to the dogs. Interested participants should call 719-395-8700 to reserve a fifteen-minute block.

Animal Crackers – Ages 2 to 8

10:00 a.m. every Wednesday

Kids will learn circus skills to improve physical dexterity and confidence. The end of the class will include extra circus activities, such as face-painting or making juggling balls.

Wiggles and Giggles – Ages 0 to 5

10:00 a.m. every Thursday

Attendees will enjoy unstructured, free play and socialization.

Story Time – Ages 0 to 5

10:00 a.m. on Fridays January 12, January 19, and January 26

Kids are introduced to a lifelong love of reading and libraries through stories. After the stories are told, attendees can complete process art activities, songs, and games to support early literacy.
