“Just dinner.”

The tenth annual BV Strong Community Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 18. Signs are already up on East Main Street announcing the closure of the road for Monday evening’s community dinner, which has become a tradition over the last ten years, as well as the signal for the end of the primary tourist season.

A rainbow stretched across the setting of the 2018 dinner as rain visited the BV Strong community dinner. This year’s weather is expected to be perfect.

Some 2,800 people are expected to attend the dinner. BV Strong invites the public to “bring a dish to share and an open heart for our incredible community.”

The dinner is free to attend and welcomes donations to help cover the cost. There will be an envelope and QR code on each table to scan, or donations can be taken to the red tables at each major intersection.

According to the BV Strong website, “The simple mission of the BV Strong Community Dinner Planning Team is, “Just dinner!” We strive to create a locally-funded and locally-organized annual activity where the residents of Buena Vista come together in a nonpolitical, noncommercial, non-promotional event to share food and friendship as we celebrate and nurture a sense of community.”

Setup of some of the 450 tables
that stretched the length of the Buena Visa Main Street for the Sept. 24. 2019 BV Strong dinner.

Table and chair setup will begin at 1:00 p.m. Guests should arrive between 5:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

The dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to linger and get to know their neighbors better. The dinner will end at 7:00 p.m.

Volunteers will be needed to clean up and put away all the chairs and tables. Tables will be broken down and brought to the North side of Main Street. Chairs will be taken to the closest crosswalk on the south side of Main Street. Volunteers will assist with stacking the chairs.

Those who ordered t-shirts ahead of the dinner can pick them up at the former police station at 713 East Main Street on Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Any last-minute updates or announcements will be posted to the BV Strong Community Dinner Facebook page. If anyone attending needs a seat or has open seats at their table, they can connect on the Facebook page as well.

On the night of the dinner, open seats will be marked with a neon “Open Seat” sign taped to the chair. Table numbers will be divided into sections A through D, with a unique number for each table. Volunteers will have maps and the list of table hosts on Main Street.

Handicap-accessible public restrooms are available for use on Railroad Street at the Splash Park and portable restrooms will be located at Colorado Avenue and Court Street.

Town ordinances do not permit open containers or public consumption of alcohol. Bicycles must be walked through the streets during the event, and it is preferred that non-service animals are left at home.

There will be dumpsters and recycling containers located at intersections with Railroad, Colorado, and Court street. Attendees should use the brown paper bag for recyclable items, such as tablecloth, water bottles, and soda cans. Plastic trash bags are for non-recyclable trash and food waste.

More information about the dinner is available on their website.
