World Breastfeeding Week, coordinated by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, is a global campaign to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding/chestfeeding. The campaign started in 1992 and is celebrated worldwide from August 1 to August 7.

World Breastfeeding Week culminates in the Global Big Latch On in multiple locations across the world, where people gather together to breastfeed/chestfeed and offer peer support to one another. In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, the Chaffee County Breastfeeding Coalition will be hosting a latch on event on Saturday, August 7 at Alpine Park in Salida.

The Chaffee County Breastfeeding Coalition will be at the Salida Farmers Market from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sat. Sat. Aug. 7 providing community breastfeeding/chestfeeding information and resources as well as fundraising and doing a Spectra breast pump drive for its breast pump loaner program.

The 2021 theme for World Breastfeeding Week is Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility. This year’s campaign will focus on how breastfeeding/chestfeeding contributes to the survival, health, and wellbeing of all, and the imperative to protect breastfeeding/chestfeeding worldwide.

Although support at the individual level is very important, breastfeeding/chestfeeding must be considered a public health issue that requires investment at all levels of society, including health systems, workplaces, and communities.

The Global Big Latch On events create a lasting support network for the community by raising awareness of breastfeeding/chestfeeding, encouraging the formation of support networks between breastfeeding/chestfeeding persons, and aiming to normalize breastfeeding/chestfeeding as a part of daily life.
