The figures don’t lie – COVID-19 cases detected in Chaffee County are on the upswing.

Newly revised figures posted on the Chaffee County Public Health Department dashboard released Monday, Sept. 28 show there now have been 13 new cases in the past week, nearly double from what was reported earlier, and 26 since the first of the month.

April Obholz Bergeler, a Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) spokesperson said the department “is concerned about the latest rise in COVID-19 cases in Chaffee County. The county’s positivity rate of 1.34% at the beginning of September has nearly doubled and now sits at 2.44%.”

“Full disclosure with our department is vital for keeping the county’s cases low, protecting the most vulnerable and securing in-person learning for students. We have been successful for the past several months, so let’s not give up now,” said CCPH Director Andrea Carlstrom.

CCPH asks community members to continue to adhere to the five commitments of containment, which are:

  1. Maintaining 6 feet of distance.
  2. Washing hands often.
  3. Wearing face coverings in public.
  4. Getting tested if symptoms develop.
  5. Staying home when sick.

Cooperation from all members of the community is critical at this time. CCPH manages the exposure notification process, which relies on an honest account of one’s interactions with others.

As of Monday, the latest infections included two males under the age of 18, three other men ages 45, 57, and 37, and a 34-year-old woman. Ten of the latest cases live in the north end of the county; just two from the south end.

Since the pandemic began, 344 cases have been reported in the county, not including 18 cases involving out-of-county residents tested.
