“Hear Ye, Hear Ye, the Polls are Officially Closed”

Chaffee polling sites closed promptly at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Election Day as called out from the front walk of the Chaffee County Administration Building. Ballot counting is continuing as of this update.

Chaffee Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell said the last ballots to come in were from Buena Visa and the election crew will process ballots until around 11:00 p.m. tonight, and whatever isn’t finished they will handle in the morning.

The number of ballots processed in a single day broke records. This is significant when you consider that as of 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, voter participation stood at only 32.9 percent.

“We processed more ballots today on a single day than we ever have in this office,” said Mitchell. “As of 5:00 p.m. the voter response stood at 52.5 percent.”

Ballot Questions a Mixed Bag

With ballots still being counted, it appears that the Buena Vista 6A Library expansion question (otherwise known as the Northern Chaffee County Library District) will pass. With 2,041 votes in favor of the ballot question and 1,384 opposed, the lead is one of the most substantial in the entire consolidated election.

The City of Salida Ballot Issue 300 appears to be going down to defeat: votes counted so far are 1,452 No votes, and 944 yes votes.

The two state-wide statutory ballot questions are a split response; with Proposition HH and Proposition II receiving the largest number of ballot votes in the county.

With county ballots still to count, those voting “no” on Prop HH total 4,630 to date, and “yes” votes stand at 3,175, while Proposition II appears to be passing in Chaffee County.

This is a developing news story and Ark Valley Voice will do an update early Wednesday.
