Looking to ‘prsnlze’ your ‘pl8’? Are you afraid that your idea might have already been taken?

You can check availability on the website dmv.colorado.gov.  Please keep in mind that between the time you check the status to the time you order, it is possible that plate configuration can be obtained by another party.

Chaffee County Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell

It’s a really good idea to have at least three options ready to go when ordering personalized plates. You are welcome to change your plate to personalized at any time or you can do it when you come in for your initial registration. The maximum letters allowed are seven for regular plates and six letters for motorcycle plates.

Personalized plates cannot look like a normal plate configuration (i.e. numbers then letters or letters then numbers; abc123, 123abc). If the state feels the plate is too close to a normal configuration they will reject that and ask that you come up with something else. Personalized plates have an extra charge of $60 the first time and then an additional $30 every year.

There are a multitude of specialty plates that are available for personalization. The list can be found on the website as well. Keep in mind, if you personalize a specialty plate the symbol in the center of the plate will no longer be printed. The fee is also increased depending on the specialty plate selected.

In an effort to keep inappropriate plates off the streets, the state will ask for a detailed description of what the plate means. If they deem it inappropriate they will not print it. For this reason, they require you to provide at least two options at the time of order.  Keep it clean, make it fun, and let it be uniquely you!

You can make the leap to personalized plates online at dmv.colorado.gov or you can come into our offices and order personalized plates through one of your motor vehicle deputies.
