Monday, April 22 is officially “Earth Day” across the United States. This afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. April 22, Central Colorado Conservancy Executive Director Andrew Mackie will be manning a booth at Natural Grocers in Salida to talk about the efforts of the CCC to protect the environment and our natural resources.

“Our job is Earth Day every day when you think about it,” said Mackie, in his typically understated voice. “We’re going to be handing out some of our seed packages from Western Native Seeds, as well as free CCC reusable shopping bags and literature on the Conservancy.”

The CCC buys the seeds that it typically distributes free of charge from Western Native Seeds, located in Coaldale. The seeds are specifically developed for the western soil types and climate. “They do sell their seeds online,” said Mackie. “You can buy anything from a small quantity to a large amount.” [www.westernnativeseed.com ]

Natural Grocers celebrates Earth Day throughout the month of April across all its stores. This year marks the first year that includes the Salida location, which opened last December.

In celebration of Earth Day customers at all Natural Grocers stores are being invited to protect one of nature’s most important insects – the ladybug – by pledging to support 100 percent organic produce and never using chemicals that harm ladybugs or other beneficial insects. (To see the video Ladybug Love, go to www.naturalgrocers.com/earth-day.) Every pledge will generate a 10 cent donation by Natural Grocers to www.beyondpesticides.org a non-profit organization that works with allies in protecting public health and the environment, with the goal of a transition to a world free of toxic pesticides.
