Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) Foundation is now accepting applications for the Dr. William G. Mehos scholarship. The scholarship provides $1,250 to a 2024 graduating high school senior who resides in the Salida Hospital District.
This district actually includes Chaffee and Saguache Counties, and Western Fremont County; however, the website description only lists Chaffee and Western Fremont counties.
To be eligible, applicants must be accepted to a college or university for fall 2024, intending to major in a healthcare field. The application requests information about the applicant including their school, counselor’s name, cumulative Grade Point Average (G.P.A.), rank in class, the college or university where the senior has been accepted, and their declared major.
The application also requires:
- A one-page narrative about why the applicant wishes to earn the scholarship.
- An outline of extra-curricular activities that is single-spaced, with one-inch margins, and 12 point font.
- Two letters of recommendation from an adult that is not a relative.
- A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript.
- ACT or SAT scores.
Guidelines and application forms for the Mehos Scholarship are available through local high school counselors or online on HRRMC’s website here. Applications must be e-mailed or postmarked by Friday, March 22.
The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university where the applicant was accepted after the Foundation has received the applicant’s student ID and class schedule.

Dr. Mehos, the namesake of the scholarship, was born and raised in Salida. Mehos returned to the area in 1959 to practice family medicine and retired in 2003. He served on the HRRMC Board of Directors from 2004 to 2012 and served on the HRRMC Foundation Board from its inception in 1986 until August 2021.
