Ark Valley Rollers is holding its third annual Ramp N’ Roll event from Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, which provides roller skate classes in Salida. Dozens of class options are planned, some with exotic-sounding names such as “Getting Grindy”, “Drop it Like It’s Hot”, and ‘Flirt with Invert”.

There will be a Roller Disco on the evening of Saturday, May 11. Registration is now open for various classes over the weekend. This event is hosted by Ark Valley High Rollers and the Ramps and Alleys Skate Shop.

Classes cover topics from learning to roller skate, roller dance, and skate park skills for all levels, along with specific kids classes. Registration for classes is available online here. Price is dependent on the class.

Events are primarily located at The Chaffee County Fairgrounds, Ramps and Alleys (645 East Rainbow Boulevard in Salida), and Centennial Skatepark (on the corner of Holman Avenue and West Rainbow Boulevard in Salida).

Learn to Roller Skate

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at the Chaffee County Fair Grounds (North Building).

Tickets cost $15. This first-timer to rookie class is intended for those aged 12 and up and will be taught by coach Brina.

It will focus on the basics, such as how to get going, stop, and fall safely while on skates. Skateopia will be on-site with rental skates and gear for the class if participants don’t have their own.

Roller Dance Basics

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.

Tickets cost $20. This all levels class is for those 18 and up. The coach is Leann.
Participants will learn a beginner-level, groovy routine. Participants can be new to dance, but should understand the basics of skating.

Welcome to the Skatepark

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This rookie to beginner class is intended for those aged 16 and up and will be taught by Coach Maddy. This rookie class will allow participants to dip their toes into the skatepark. It will focus on familiarizing various park features, park etiquette, and other users of the park, allowing participants to explore their comfort zone.

Gettin’ Grindy

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner to intermediate class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Gabby.

“If you’ve got some wide trucks and are looking to tackle tricks beyond frontside slides, this is the class for you,” states the description. The class will break down foot positions, entering/exiting the trick, and how to carry momentum through the grind. This session is designed for newer park skaters who feel comfortable stalling in various positions and are ready to build upon that.

Heartn’ the Bowl

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Brina.

Participants will learn how to spice up their bowl skating with fluid lines, creative use of features, and incorporation of tricks.

Pro Bowl Handplants

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This advanced class is for those aged 18 and up and will be taught by Coach Angel.

This class is for advanced skaters who want to solidify their hand plants by creating new lines with bowl features, such as 12’ pool coping drop ins, creative transfers, extensions, and rock features. The class will be flexible, honing in on what the participants want to learn.

Manuals and Spins

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds (North Building).

Tickets cost $25. This all-levels class is for those aged 18 and up and will be taught by Coach Leann.

Participants will receive an inclusive look at skating fundamentals, such as toes, heels, and pivots.

Drop It Like It’s Hot

11:oo a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 11 at Ramps and Alleys in Salida.

Tickets cost $20. This rookie to beginner class is for those aged 16 and up and will be taught by Coach Brina.

Ramps and Alleys will offer a progression of mini ramps to help participants nail their first drop in. There will be support “every roll of the way.”

Twinkle Toes

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Centennial Skatepark

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Maddy.

It will explore creative uses of toe stops beyond just stopping, from slides to stalls and transfers.

This class will be offered twice. This event on Saturday is for intermediate to advanced skaters and the second class will be held on Sunday for beginner to intermediate skaters.

Heartn’ the Bowl

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Gabby.

Participants will experience carving a bowl that offers features for all skill levels. Participants should be comfortable dropping in from 3 feet with mellow transition or sliding. The class will focus on how to maneuver around the bowl with a sprinkling of stalls, transitions, or airs as participants are comfortable.

Gettin’ Grindy

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Angel.

This class is designed for more seasoned skaters looking to expand their grinding repertoire.

Family Roller Dance

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 11 at Chaffee County Fairgrounds (North Building).

Tickets cost $20. This event is for all levels and for skaters aged 10 and up. It is taught by Coach Leann.

Skate Mechanics

12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Ramps and Alleys.

This free event offers a break between classes to grab some lunch and learn about skates from the pros. Participants are welcome to come and get to know their skates and how to best care for them so they work with a skater’s specific needs.

Flirt with Invert

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and will be taught by Coach Brina.

This class will explore inverts from handstands to cartwheels.

Gettin’ Grindy

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner to intermediate class is for participants aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Maddy.

Participants will need wide trucks and a desire to tackle tricks beyond frontside slides. The class will break down foot positions, entering/exiting the trick, and how to carry momentum through the grind. This session is designed for newer park skaters who feel comfortable stalling in various positions and are ready to build upon that. Class is tailored to the participants’ needs.

Steezy Stalls and Slides

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Ramps and Alleys

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Gabby.

Participants will learn to add some personality to ramp skating. This class is intended for advanced skaters seeking to broaden their trick repertoire and knowledge of stalls and slides beyond frontside. There will be two wooden ramps of varying heights on which to learn. Participants should be comfortable with dropping in from 3 feet before participating in this class.

Slide on Over

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Angel.

Participants should have slide blocks on their skates. They will learn the progression of sliding on coping, ledges, and rails. Before taking this class, skaters should be comfortable dropping in, stalling, and jumping on and off small ledges or rails.

Crazy Legs

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds (North Building).

Tickets cost $25. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 18 and up and is taught by Coach Leann.

This class is for those who have the basics of skating down and want to begin or continue their journey to crazy legs. Crazy legs is a popular dance move.

Urban Adventures Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Alpine Park at the west corner of F Street and 4th Street.

Tickets for each class cost $5. These beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes are for those aged 18 and up. The beginner class is taught by Coaches Stacy and Leann, intermediate by Coaches Brina and Maddy, and advanced by Coaches Gabby and Angel.

These classes will focus on creative ways to skate the streets and explore Salida with new eyes.

Ramp & Roll Kidz

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Ramps and Alleys.

Tickets cost $15. This class is for participants aged 6 to 11 and is taught by Coach Maddy.

This class will serve as an introduction to ramp skating and is designed to guide kids through the basics of skating transition, building their skills and confidence. Ramps and Alleys provides a progression of ramps, so participants can work on skills, such as pumping and carving. Instructors approach the learning process with an attitude of support, humor, and encouragement for all involved.

No Coping Required

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Brina.

This class will explore tricks beyond coping from rotations to transitions to toe stop tricks and more. There will be no shortage of new moves to try.

Slide on Over

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Gabby.

Participants with slide blocks on their skates are welcome to come learn the progression of sliding on coping, ledges, and rails. Skaters should be comfortable dropping in, stalling, and jumping on an off small ledges or rails before taking this class.

Intro Miller/Monkey Flips

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Centennial Skatepark

Tickets cost $20. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 18 and up and is taught by Coach Angel.

The class will focus on demystifying flips with a thorough walkthrough of the smaller steps involved in flip progression and tips to bail safely when necessary.

Jam Skating Partners Routine

10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Sunday, May 12 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.

Tickets cost $30. This intermediate to advanced class is for those aged 18 and up and is taught by Coach Leann.

Participants will skate in close proximity to each other at specific speeds with a focus on transferring weight and using edges to create new patterns with an emphasis on tempo.

Ramp & Roll Kidz

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This class is intended for those aged 12 to 15 and will be taught by Coach Brina.

The class is an introduction to the skate park and is designed for youth who are comfortable on skates and looking to expand to park skating.

Twinkle Toes

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Centennial Skatepark.

Tickets cost $20. This beginner to intermediate class is for those aged 16 and up and is taught by Coach Maddy.

There will be two wooden ramps of varying heights on which to learn. Participants should be comfortable dropping in from 3 feet or higher before participating in this class. Wide trucks are recommended but not required.

Ramp N’ Roll BBQ

1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Ramps and Alleys in Salida

Tickets cost $10. Everyone is invited to come sip cold drinks, eat, and congratulate all participants after a weekend of skating.  Veggie, dairy-free, and gluten-free options available.
