The Ski with a Naturalist at Monarch Mountain program begins on January 5. The public is invited to join the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) at 11:00 a.m. every other Friday for a free naturalist tour to learn about forest ecology, wildlife in the winter, the history of recreation on Monarch Pass, and the partnership of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and Monarch.

A guest volunteer interpreter will lead the tour and share additional information from their particular area of expertise. The Ski with a Naturalist event will meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Cat Skiing Yurt near the bottom of the Pioneer Lift. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome as the tour will follow beginner runs.

Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) Central Mountains Highway Forecaster Will Barrett will be the guest interpreter at the first event on January 5. The public is invited to learn about what the CAIC does in this region.

The tour is free, but a valid lift ticket or season pass is required for participation. Other dates for the event include January 15, February 2, February 16, March 1, and March 15.

For Monarch’s Backcountry Day, there will be a special uphill naturalist tour on Sunday, January 21.

Ski with a Naturalist is a partnership with GARNA, Monarch Mountain, and the USFS Salida Ranger District. More information about this and other programs is available online at GARNA.org.

Additionally, the GARNA Hiking Club will be leading snowshoe hikes on alternate Fridays starting on January 12. The hiking club is a GARNA members-only club. Those interested in participating can join or renew their membership online.
