The Tabor will be open to free self-guided tours, and guests may explore the theater, museum, and ballroom. Leadville’s Oro City String Band will play from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and refreshments will be available.

Tabor staff and board members will be welcoming guests, sharing news of rehabilitation progress, and asking for feedback on 2023 programming ideas.

“We hope all community members will join us to celebrate a successful comeback 2022 season,” said Sarah Dae, executive director of the Tabor Opera House Preservation Foundation. “After two years of pandemic closures, this year nearly 800 people enjoyed live performances, and around 1,800 people took guided tours. Both are exciting milestones for Leadville and Lake County as we revitalize the Tabor Opera House.”

History of the Tabor Opera House

Mining magnate Horace (H.A.W.) Tabor built the opera house in 1879 in just 100 days in one of the West’s rowdiest silver boomtowns. Located at 308 Harrison Avenue in Leadville,  The Tabor Opera House has stood through 143 long winters in North America’s highest-elevation city.

Today, in a town with no community center, no movie theater, and no formal performance spaces, the Tabor Opera House remains a much-needed cultural and community center. This elegant building has been deemed a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, but it is endangered. A multi-year, $15 million rehabilitation is now underway.
