Southern Ute Johny Valdez is the special guest and will be the first speaker. Valdez will speak about Star Lore and offer a blessing at the start of the afternoon. Presentations will begin at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free though donations will be accepted.

“We welcome donations to Badger Creek Ranch Community/Full Circle Alliance, to continue and expand the work of regenerative agriculture, grazing techniques, water conservation, Audubon Ranching Conservation Program efforts, and education,” states the Badger Creek Ranch Community event announcement.

The event will feature a PowerPoint presentation covering Archaeology and Archaeoastronomy by Native American Research and Preservation, Inc.’s Ken Frye and Becky Donlan. The presentation includes information on archaeological sites in the area. Archaeoastronomy aspects have been found in research with several sites.

Additional speakers include Dani Robben, Community Connections Coordinator from San Luis Valley Great Outdoors (SLV GO!) and DarkSky Colorado, who will make a presentation on the importance of dark skies.

Friends of Browns Canyon will have two speakers discuss their Dark Sky certification efforts and programs for 2024. They will also cover information on their dark Sky quality meters and how readings are measured in the Monument.

According to their website, Badger Creek Ranch Community seeks to “promote the natural revitalization of the land, people, and animals in the Badger Creek watershed through three initiatives.” These initiatives include restoring the land and watershed through regenerative practices, nourishing the “minds, bodies, and spirits” of the community, and educating future ranchers, other land stewards, and the public to uphold the land’s cultural legacy into the future.

Full Circle Alliance, Inc. is a nonprofit “dedicated to regenerating, strengthening, and healing the relationship between humans and the natural environment at Badger Creek Ranch.” The organization supports the Badger Creek Ranch Community and its three initiatives.
