The Chaffee County Fair Thursday featured events involving area 4-H clubs in competition, showing animals they raise, train, care for, and groom as educational projects.

One of the events was the Market Sheep and Goat competition.

Sheep and Goat judge Zac Bushaban carefully looked over and examined each of the animals in several categories, and in making his decisions, announced the characteristics that led to his rankings. In addition, he coached the young 4-H’ers on their project animals; the pluses and drawbacks and their own handling techniques.

A small but appreciative crowd viewed the two-hour-long competition and warmly applauded the youngster’s efforts.

Chaffee County 4-H under the CSU Extension is the youth development program serving young people throughout Chaffee County. Young people between the ages of five and 18 participate in a variety of 4-H projects in the Upper Arkansas Valley and in leadership roles in their 4-H Clubs, County, Region and State.

More than 100 youth in the county are involved in a wide variety of programs ranging from raising animals to robotics, from cake decorating to sport fishing, and any child in the county can participate, under the guidance of dozens of adult volunteers and 4-H senior students.

As the 4-H County CSU Extension site says; “In Chaffee County 4-H, we believe in our head, heart, hands, and health. Our heads are knowledgeable and creative, our heart is caring and compassionate, our hands work hard, and our health is important in every decision we make. We believe in caring for our club, our community, our country, and our world.”
