Chaffee resident Phuong Nu Hoang Dong Nguyen, age 28, was involved in a car accident on CR 321, just above Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort just before 2 p.m. on May 27. The car went off the south side of the roadway and down the steep embankment. The narrow road travels up the steep bluff above CR 162, and has no guard rails or road shoulders.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found the car vehicle and rescued Nguyen and her five-year-old passenger from the car. Both driver and passenger were transported to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Following treatment, Nguyen was taken into custody by Chaffee County Sheriff personnel and transported to the Chaffee County Detention Facility, charged with Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder, a Class 2 Felony.

No explanation was given for why the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) was not called to the scene of the accident. The CSP normally investigates accidents, including those on county roads. No other details related to the accident or the charge made by the Chaffee County Sheriff’s office has been provided. The minor passenger was released to a guardian.
